Is Ductless AC Right For Me?

October 13, 2022 | Blog

If you’re looking for an easier installation and highly energy-efficient cooling system, ductless AC might be for you! Air Tech of Katy understands that navigating all the different options might be confusing, which is why we’ve compiled a list of all the pros and cons of ductless AC.

What Is Ductless AC?

In its most basic form, ductless AC includes an outdoor and indoor unit, which is connected by electrical wiring and refrigerant tubing. The indoor unit has evaporator coils that cool down air, delivering targeted heating or cooling directly into a specific area, such as the living room or bedroom.

Unlike traditional HVAC systems, ductless AC lacks the complicated ductwork that traditional AC systems have. Ductless AC can be configured with one or multiple indoor units.

  • Single-zone units are installed with one outdoor compressor and one indoor compressor. The refrigerant is carried in and out of the house by a small pipe.
  • One outdoor compressor can power up to five indoor units, which is known as a multi-zone. They operate the same way as single-zone units.

Ductless AC is an ideal option for older homes and buildings, since they are usually constructed with thick walls and tight spaces, making traditional AC installation impossible, or very difficult. The indoor and outdoor units of ductless AC can be up to 50 feet apart and still work efficiently, which circumnavigates the issues of installation in an older home.

However, this definitely doesn’t mean they’re limited to older builds! Ductless AC works just as well in a new home, especially if you’re looking for new HVAC installation options. They’re also a great choice if you’re looking to expand your space, such as an additional room or patio. Ductless AC can be installed in the new spaces without having to redo existing ductwork.

Mini-Split Pros And Cons

A common misconception is that mini-split and ductless ACs are two different types of HVAC systems. In reality, they’re the same thing and can be used interchangeably.

  • Mini-split systems are very energy efficient. Since they don’t have ductwork, they don’t require as much power to operate or start them up.
  • The lack of ductwork means less work for installation, so no patching and painting.
  • In areas that experience warm weather year-round, mini split cooling is highly efficient.
  • Ductless AC is extremely efficient for targeted heating and cooling to specific rooms.
  • For rooms that already have pre-existing AC or fluctuating temperatures, the mini-split AC is a great option to stabilize temperatures.
  • Non-traditional AC tends to run more quietly than traditional AC options, allowing for better operation.

  • Installation for a mini-split system is usually more expensive than traditional HVAC systems. However, they may save you money over time for utility costs.
  • Some mini-splits are wall-mounted and are visible, which could be a distracting design.
  • In places that have extremely cold climates, you may need fuel-based backups for heating options.
  • Ductless AC needs proper maintenance for air filtration. Accumulating debris could shorten your system’s lifespan, costing hundreds of dollars to fix a clogged ductless AC.
